Saskatoon Berry Jam

A prairie treat. Saskatoon jam is the perfect combination of tart and sweet, and is delicious on toast or in a bowl of yogurt.

6 cups


  • 4 cups saskatoons Local Riverbend Orchards
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 whole lemon


1. Wash and measure saskatoon berries
2. Add saskatoons to a large pot and cook over medium heat until juices start to flow
3. Add sugar and bring to a boil, stirring constantly
4. Add lemon juice and peel and bring to a boil, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes
5. Test the thickness of the jam by placing a spoonful of jam in the freezer for 5 minutes
6. When your freezer test produces the consistency of your choice pour jam into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space
7. Wipe the jar rims and place lid and ring on jars
8. Process the jars of jam in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes
9. Let sit overnight. Check the seals in the morning, those that have not sealed properly should be placed in the fridge and eaten within a couple of weeks


Saskatoons were picked just outside of Portage at Riverbend Orchards. I would strongly advise a visit to their farm, they have one of the best u-picks around!

I like to add a bit less sugar, and I also like to double the recipe. I used 3/4 of the sugar and a bit less lemon in my most recent batch and the jam turned out great.
